Bizarre road work sparks outrage in Karwar

Karwar residents are outraged after contractors asphalted a perfect concrete road, then destroyed the surface while scraping it off, sparking allegations of massive fund misuse

KARWAR

At a time when road projects across the state are stalled due to a lack of funds and bitumen, a bizarre controversy has erupted in Karwar. Residents are furious after contractors laid asphalt over a perfectly maintained concrete road, only to tear it up a day later.

The incident occurred on the busy stretch connecting the Karwar bus stand to the Kaiga nuclear power plant. Locals were shocked to see workers suddenly applying asphalt to the solid concrete surface. Following a massive public outcry, the contractors halted the work halfway. However, in an attempt to hide the mistake, they used a JCB to scrape off the fresh asphalt, severely damaging the original concrete road in the process.

The project was reportedly funded under the K-SHIP scheme. Sources say the contractor, who hails from Vijayapura, failed to survey the site properly. Furthermore, the work was allegedly started without informing local Public Works Department officials. This has raised serious questions about how lakhs of rupees were sanctioned for a road that required no repairs while other areas struggle for basic maintenance.

Public anger is boiling over the blatant waste of taxpayer money. Residents are questioning the logic of ruining a good road during a statewide bitumen shortage. While many MLAs are pleading for grants to fix broken streets, Karwar has witnessed a “scientific disaster” where profit-driven work has left a once-perfect road in ruins. Authorities are now under pressure to investigate this misuse of public funds.
