BIRMINGHAM
Aston Villa midfielder Lucy Staniforth has announced she will retire from professional football at the end of this season. The 33-year-old is bringing a close to an impressive 16-year career that saw her rise from a teenage debutant to an international star for England.
Staniforth joined Aston Villa in early 2023 from Manchester United and quickly became a central figure in the team’s midfield. During her time in the “claret and blue” jersey, she helped the club achieve its best-ever league finish and played a key role in several memorable victories. Although injuries slowed her down in recent seasons, she remained a highly respected leader on and off the pitch.
Reflecting on her decision, Staniforth told that she feels “super-content” with everything she has achieved. “It’s been really cool to take the football lens off and be excited for me, as a person, moving into the big, wide world,” she shared. The York-born player earned 17 caps for the England national team, even scoring on her debut and representing her country at the 2019 World Cup.
Aston Villa’s Director of Women’s Football, Marisa Ewers, praised Staniforth’s immense quality and character. Having started her journey at Sunderland at just 16, Staniforth leaves the game as a veteran who overcame major setbacks, including serious knee injuries, to reach the very top. Fans will have one last chance to cheer for the midfield maestro before she hangs up her boots for good.
