CSK spinner Akeal Hosein uses discipline and mindset to dominate powerplay overs

Chennai Super Kings spinner Akeal Hosein has credited a blend of skill and mental fortitude for his growing impact in the powerplay during the Indian Premier League 2026, emerging as a key weapon in the early overs.
Bowling in the most restrictive phase of a T20 innings — with only two fielders allowed outside the circle — Hosein has embraced the challenge with remarkable composure. The left-arm spinner delivered a telling spell of 3-0-15-1 in the powerplay, playing a crucial role in CSK’s eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals on Tuesday.
Hosein emphasised that success in the powerplay is less about aggression and more about discipline and clarity. “You can’t go searching for wickets or be too greedy. It’s about sticking to the plan and executing consistently,” he said, highlighting the mental demands of bowling in high-pressure situations.
One of the standout moments of his spell was the dismissal of KL Rahul, whom he outfoxed with flight and variation as the batter attempted an attacking stroke. The breakthrough set the tone for CSK’s dominance early in the innings.
Having not featured in the initial matches this season, Hosein has made a strong case for his inclusion, picking up seven wickets in five games at an impressive economy rate of 7.25. His ability to control the scoring rate while maintaining wicket-taking threat has added balance to CSK’s bowling unit.
Hosein also underscored the importance of preparation and adaptability. He noted that understanding pitch conditions and planning against specific batters gives him an edge. “Homework is very important. It helps you make quicker assessments and decide which deliveries will work best on a given surface,” he explained.
His role extends beyond his own spell, as he actively communicates insights to teammates like Noor Ahmad and the pace attack, ensuring collective effectiveness.
