India’s steel output grows 5.8% in April

New Delhi

India’s steel sector continued its growth momentum in April, with crude steel production rising 5.8% year-on-year to 14.09 million tonnes, according to an official statement. Strong demand from infrastructure and manufacturing sectors supported the expansion, while domestic steel prices also improved across major categories. Finished steel consumption increased 8.1% to 12.99 million tonnes, reflecting robust market activity. Imports stood at 0.68 million tonnes and exports at 0.47 million tonnes, making India a marginal net importer during the month. Capacity expansion efforts continue under the National Steel Policy, with major producers investing in new projects, including a green steel plant by Tata Steel. The government’s green steel initiative is also gaining traction across multiple states.
