GANDHINAGAR
On World Athletics Day, Gujarat is celebrating the massive success of Khel Mahakumbh, a sports initiative that is transforming lives from small villages to the national stage. Launched in 2010 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this program has turned sports into a respected profession for the state’s youth.
The 2026 theme, “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers,” perfectly describes Gujarat’s mission. Athletics is the foundation of all sports, and Khel Mahakumbh provides the perfect platform for young people to build discipline and fitness. This year’s state-level event in Nadiad saw over 9,300 young athletes compete, with an almost equal number of boys and girls participating. This balance shows the growing passion for sports among all young citizens.
The competition included 390 different events, ranging from long-distance running and hurdles to high jump and javelin throw. These games are not just for fun, they are a training ground for future champions. Winners received medals and professional gear to help them continue their journey.
The impact of this program is clear through the success of local legends. Athletes like Sarita Gayakwad, the “Golden Girl” of Dang, and Murali Gavit have already won medals at the Asian Games and other international championships. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government continues to provide high-performance training centers. By nurturing talent at the grassroots level, Gujarat is ensuring that the next generation of Indian sports stars comes from its own backyard.
