Dropped catches cost Punjab victory against Hyderabad

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer blamed poor fielding and dropped catches for their 33-run loss to Hyderabad, despite Cooper Connolly’s historic century.

HYDERABAD

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer was left reflecting on missed opportunities after his team suffered a 33-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite a historic performance from a young star, Iyer admitted that poor fielding proved to be the deciding factor in the high-scoring match.

Hyderabad set a massive total of 235 runs, but the story could have been different. Punjab fielders dropped key batters Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen early in their innings. Both players took full advantage of these lifelines, smashing half-centuries that pushed the game out of reach. “We weren’t able to take catches,” a frustrated Iyer noted after the game. He pointed out that while the team started the season strong, they cannot afford such sloppy mistakes if they want to stay competitive.

The match wasn’t without highlights for Punjab. Cooper Connolly played a breathtaking innings, scoring an unbeaten 107 runs. At just 19, he became the youngest overseas player to hit an IPL century. Iyer praised the teenager’s fearless mindset under pressure and also commended Yuzvendra Chahal for his steady bowling on a difficult pitch.

However, a top-order collapse left Connolly with too much to do alone. Chasing a giant target, Punjab finished on 202 runs. While the batting showed heart, the skipper insisted that the team must improve their consistency and fielding standards immediately. For Hyderabad, the win was a clinical display of how to punish an opponent’s mistakes and control the game.
