Lokayukta seeks report by May 16 on Bowring Hospital wall collapse

The Karnataka Lokayukta has directed officials to submit a detailed report by May 16 on the collapse of a compound wall at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Shivajinagar that claimed seven lives.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the April 29 incident, Lokayukta and Deputy Lokayukta officials visited the site on Monday to inspect the damage and assess preliminary evidence. The collapse, triggered by heavy rain, killed seven people, including women and children, raising serious concerns over infrastructure safety.

A senior police officer of Superintendent rank has been appointed as the investigating officer, supported by a team that includes a District Judge and the Chief Engineer from the Lokayukta’s technical wing. The team conducted a spot inspection in the presence of Greater Bengaluru Authority officials and gathered initial evidence.

Notices have been issued to concerned civic authorities, seeking detailed information on the construction, maintenance and safety of the wall. Officials have been asked to cooperate fully with the probe.

The Lokayukta has scheduled the next hearing in the case for May 20 at 12:30 pm, after reviewing the investigation report.

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny over civic negligence and infrastructure upkeep, with authorities now under pressure to fix accountability and prevent similar tragedies.
