BENGALURU
The delayed Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) has received a fresh push with the government initiating acquisition of nearly 31,000 sqm of land near Devanahalli for a key depot facility.
The land will be used to build a primary depot for the Majestic–Devanahalli corridor, also known as the Sampige Line (Corridor-1), which will connect the city centre to the airport region via Yelahanka. The proposed depot is planned at Akkupete near Devanahalli.
The Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board has issued a preliminary notification to acquire land across five villages—Akkupete, Sanna Amanikere, Hireamanikere, Upparahalli and Devanahalli. The largest share, about 14,000 sqm, falls in Akkupete, followed by smaller parcels in the other villages.
Officials said around 50 properties fall within the notified area, mostly owned by private individuals, though some parcels belong to the government and the National Highways Authority of India. The notification restricts sale, lease or development of the land without prior approval and bars any obstruction to officials conducting surveys or inspections.
Compensation for landowners will be determined under the provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, 2013, along with the KIADB Act. In a parallel move, the land has been designated as an industrial area to facilitate project execution.
The depot will be developed by K-RIDE, which is implementing the suburban rail network. Sources said nearly 31 acres have been identified, including forest and government land, with necessary clearances already secured. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in operations, maintenance and stabling of trains on the corridor, improving connectivity to the northern outskirts and boosting the overall suburban rail network.
