Coastal festival celebrates unity and local talent

BANTWAL

The vibrant Karavali Kalotsava-2026 multicultural festival kicked off with great energy at B.C. Road. Organized by the Chinnaraloka Seva Trust in partnership with the state government, the six-day event aims to bring together different cultures through art, language, and tradition.

The festival began with a colorful folk procession, featuring traditional groups from across the state moving toward the main stage. Former Minister B. Ramanath Rai inaugurated the gathering, expressing his hope that celebrating diverse languages like Tulu, Beary, and Konkani would promote peace and harmony in society. Adding a unique touch to the opening day, the town hosted its first-ever women’s saree walking competition, which drew a large and enthusiastic crowd.

The event also served as a platform to honor local heroes. International kabaddi player Rohit Marla received a top achievement award, while social worker Elias Sankris and young multi-talented student Saanvi were also recognized for their contributions. Beyond the awards, the organizers showed their commitment to the community by distributing free books and umbrellas to local students and providing scholarships to college trainees.

The evening concluded with a stunning Yakshagana performance, a traditional dance-drama, presented by the students of the trust. Running until May 9, the festival promises a week filled with cultural pride and artistic excellence. Leaders from various literary academies joined the stage, marking a successful start to a celebration that honors the unique spirit of the coastal region.
