Gavaskar urges Bumrah to keep it simple

MUMBAI

Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes Jasprit Bumrah needs to stop overthinking and return to his roots to find his lost rhythm. Despite Mumbai Indians’ recent victory over Lucknow Super Giants, the star pacer’s uncharacteristic struggle with form and discipline has become a major talking point in IPL 2026.

Gavaskar noted that Bumrah, usually the gold standard of precision, is currently trying too hard to make things happen. This effort has led to uncharacteristic mistakes, including an unusual number of no-balls and a noticeable dip in his trademark pace. The veteran analyst pointed out that Bumrah’s once-deadly yorkers and slower balls are drifting off-target, landing too full or sliding down the leg side.

“He is overdoing things, and that’s hurting him,” Gavaskar observed during a recent interview. He suggested that trying too many variations has disrupted Bumrah’s natural flow. According to Gavaskar, the solution is simple, stick to the basics that made him the world’s best. He remains confident that just one or two good wickets will restore the bowler’s confidence and bring him back to his peak.

Gavaskar also touched upon Lucknow’s failure to defend a massive total of 228. He criticized their team selection, suggesting that benching key players like Digvesh Rathi was a tactical blunder. While Mumbai celebrated a record chase, the message for Bumrah was clear, success in the high-pressure T20 format often comes from doing the simple things perfectly rather than searching for new magic.
