Young tigresses end 21-year wait with Asian cup opener

SUZHOU

The Indian Women’s U17 National Team is set to make a historic return to the continental stage as they face Australia in their opening match of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00 IST and will be streamed live on the AFC Asian Cup YouTube channel.

This match marks India’s first appearance in the tournament since 2005, ending a 21-year drought. It also completes a landmark “triple crown” for Indian women’s football in 2026, with the Senior, U20, and U17 teams all qualifying for their respective Asian Cups in the same year.

Preparation and Form

Under the guidance of Italian head coach Pamela Conti, the “Young Tigresses” have undergone an intense four-month buildup:

Coach and Player Perspectives

Coach Conti, who previously led Venezuela to a FIFA U20 World Cup, emphasized that the physical work is done and the focus is now on tactical sharpness. “We are ready… it’s always a great feeling to represent a big country like India,” she stated.

Tournament Environment

The tournament is being hosted at the world-class Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre, where all 12 participating teams are staying in a centralized “bubble.” With perfect weather reported in Suzhou, the stage is set for the Young Tigresses to prove they belong among Asia’s elite.

Having watched the Senior and U20 teams compete earlier this year, the U17 squad is determined to go one step further and aim for a knockout-stage qualification.
