PM Awas Yojana faces irregularity allegations

PM Awas irregularities

Serious allegations of irregularities have surfaced in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Jewargi taluk, where houses meant for economically weaker sections remain incomplete even after three years.

The scheme, aimed at providing affordable housing, was expected to benefit hundreds of families. However, beneficiaries allege delays, poor-quality construction, and mismanagement, forcing many to continue living in rented houses or temporary shelters after demolishing their old homes.

According to reports, around 750 houses were sanctioned under the Karnataka Slum Development Board. While funds were reportedly released, several units remain incomplete, leading to accusations of negligence by contractors and officials.

Bhima Army leader Vishwaradhya Gopalkar alleged large-scale financial irregularities, including inflated billing for construction materials such as sand, cement, and concrete. He claimed contractors are overcharging and showing inflated costs in official records while supplying inadequate materials.

Beneficiaries further alleged that they are being forced to bear additional expenses such as labour and construction costs, despite the scheme promising complete housing support. Many families say they have taken loans to continue construction work.

Several beneficiaries said they were initially assured fully constructed houses, prompting them to demolish their existing homes. Later, they were allegedly told to complete construction themselves with limited financial assistance, leading to severe hardship.

Residents also alleged lack of response from officials despite repeated complaints. Some said they have been living in unsafe conditions for years, facing health and safety risks.

Beneficiaries have demanded a high-level inquiry, including a probe by the Lokayukta, and strict action against those responsible. They also urged immediate completion of pending houses to ensure relief for affected families.
