Hunsur Rathotsava seen as step toward equality

Hunsur

A traditional chariot festival at the ancient Sri Lakshminarasimhaswamy Temple in Hunsur has been highlighted as a strong example of social change and unity, with leaders calling it a step towards ending caste barriers.

Speaking at the event, Ningraj Malladi, state organisation coordinator of Dasansa, said the town reflects the spirit of 12th-century social reform ideas associated with Basavanna and his vision of equality through Anubhava Mantapa.

He said that in earlier times, Dalits were not allowed to enter Brahmin streets and had to stand at a distance. However, this year’s Rathotsava saw a significant change as members of the Dalit community were invited to participate in pulling the temple chariot alongside Brahmin community leaders.

Malladi said this gesture reflects the breakdown of long-standing social barriers and promotes dignity, respect, and coexistence. He described it as an important moment in the fight against untouchability and a model for wider society.

He added that such inclusion has helped improve social harmony and reduced historical tensions between communities. He also said the event showed that cooperation can replace division when traditions evolve with time.

Several community members, leaders, and elders from both Dalit and Brahmin communities took part in the festival. Participants said the event created a sense of unity and mutual respect.

Speakers also acknowledged the cultural contributions of Hunsur to the state, including its connection to cinema and public life.

The celebration concluded with participation from hundreds of devotees, marking the festival as a symbol of changing social relations and growing inclusiveness in the region.
