Urban Development Minister Bairathi Suresh has criticised the central government over the recent increase in commercial gas prices, stating that the move has made life difficult for the poor.

Speaking to reporters during a foundation-laying ceremony for various development works at Bommanakatte Ashraya layout, he alleged that the Centre raised gas prices soon after elections in five states concluded, calling it unfair to common people. He said a sudden increase of around 993 in gas cylinder prices has severely impacted economically weaker sections.

He also accused the central government of creating divisions among communities and questioned its economic policies. He pointed out that while even small price hikes by the previous Congress government were protested by the BJP, the current steep increase had gone unchallenged by them.

Defending electricity tariff revisions, he said rising fuel prices naturally impact power costs. “If petroleum product prices go up, electricity rates will also rise,” he added.

On cabinet expansion, the minister said the decision rests entirely with the party high command and that all leaders must abide by it. He remarked that political positions are temporary and leaders should continue working as long as they hold office. He also referred to past changes in BJP governments to justify cabinet reshuffles.

Suresh further announced that 2600 crore has been allocated under the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana for 13 municipal corporations, including 200 crore for Shivamogga. He said tenders have already been called and work will begin soon. He added that development projects under Smart City and other schemes will continue without interruption.
