Congress leaders expressed confidence after meeting alliance partners and dismissed exit polls predicting a BJP sweep
Guwahati
Senior Congress observers DK Shivakumar, Bhupesh Baghel and Jitendra Singh met alliance leaders in Guwahati on Saturday before the Assam Assembly election results on May 4.
Congress has formed an alliance with Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), APHLC and CPI(ML) to challenge the ruling BJP-led NDA.
Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi said the alliance partners were united and confident of forming the next government. He claimed farmers, women and young voters supported the opposition alliance for change in the state. Gogoi also asked party workers to closely monitor strong rooms and remain prepared for counting day arrangements.
Rejecting the exit polls predicting a comfortable BJP victory, Gogoi alleged that the ruling party was trying to influence public opinion by creating a false atmosphere before the results. He said the alliance would not fall into such a trap and remained fully focused on protecting votes during counting.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also dismissed the exit poll predictions. He claimed many voters were afraid to openly express their political opinions because of pressure from the ruling party. Shivakumar said Congress conducted its own internal survey and remained confident about winning the election.
He further claimed that some BJP leaders, including candidates and ministers, had privately approached Congress leaders after losing confidence about their chances in the election.
Several exit polls predicted another victory for the BJP-led NDA in Assam. Axis My India projected between 88 and 100 seats for the alliance, while the Congress-led bloc was expected to win between 24 and 36 seats. Other surveys by JVC and Matrize also forecast an advantage for the ruling alliance before counting begins Monday morning.
