China’s railway sets new record on May 1

SHANGHAI

China’s railway network set a new record on May 1, carrying 24.8 million passengers in a single day during the Labour Day holiday, according to official data. The China State Railway Group said travel demand surged across the country. Another 19.7 million passengers are expected to travel on May 2. To manage the rush, several routes added extra trains. Zhengzhou line added 140 trains and Chengdu added 184 services. Officials said holiday travel remains strong, supported by growing tourism demand, even as China’s economy faces pressure from weak consumer spending and a slow property market downturn nationwide during holiday period.
