Buddha’s teachings vital for modern peace: MLA

Kalaburagi

Emphasising the continuing relevance of Gautama Buddha’s teachings, Kalaburagi South MLA Allamaprabhu Patil said that the message of peace, compassion, and non-violence is crucial conflict-ridden world.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Buddha Jayanti celebrations held near Jagat Circle at Lumbini Garden, in front of the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar. The programme was jointly organised by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, City Corporation, and the Department of Kannada and Culture.

Patil said Buddha’s enlightenment was not confined to any single religion but represented a universal message for humanity. He added that Dr B R Ambedkar, inspired by Buddha’s philosophy, embraced Buddhism along with lakhs of followers in 1956, marking a historic movement for equality and dignity.

He noted that Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana all occurred on Vaishakha Purnima, highlighting its spiritual importance. He urged the youth to follow Buddhist principles, which gained wide acceptance during the reign of Emperor Ashoka.

MLC Tippannappa Kamakanur said that the teachings of Buddha, Basavanna, and Ambedkar reflect shared values of equality and justice. While Buddha promoted peace and truth, Ambedkar ensured constitutional rights for the oppressed, he said.

Former Kannada Development Authority member Suresh Badiger said Buddha had established an egalitarian social order nearly 2,500 years ago, long before later reform movements.

The event included Buddha Vandana, prayer songs, and participation from senior officials including the District Collector, Police Commissioner, Zilla Panchayat CEO, and other dignitaries, along with hundreds of citizens.
