MUMBAI
The Andheri Sports Complex is buzzing with energy as the Maharashtra Pickleball Association (MPA) officially kicked off the Maharashtra Open 2026. This major three-day event, running from May 1 to 3, has quickly become the state’s biggest stage for the fast-growing sport, attracting over 1,000 eager players.
The tournament was inaugurated by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar alongside MPA President Rahool Kanal. The competition features top-tier talent, including Arjun and Aditya Singh, who recently brought home three gold medals from the US Open in Florida. Also hitting the court is Mihika Yadav, India’s second-ranked female pro.
Early matches have already delivered high drama. In the singles finals, Aahana Punjabi took the women’s crown with a powerful performance, while Atharva Khishti triumphed in the men’s category. In a major twist, young star Arush Niture pulled off a massive upset by defeating champion Arjun Singh in the semi-finals before falling to Khishti in the finale.
“Our goal is to make Maharashtra the heart of pickleball in India,” said Rahool Kanal, noting that the association gained 750 members in just its first month. Minister Shelar echoed this pride, promising government support for the athletes.
This championship isn’t just about local glory, winners earn a spot to represent Maharashtra at the National Championship later this year. As the sport spreads into smaller towns and districts, this weekend’s event marks a historic turning point for athletes and fans across the state.
