Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti said that the historic town of Lakkundi is on track to be included in the World Heritage List soon. He said this on Saturday while speaking at a programme held in Lakkundi, adding that the town’s ancient beauty creates a strong sense of pride rather than discomfort.
Horatti said recent discoveries of archaeological objects and gold coins have brought Lakkundi into the spotlight at both state and national levels. He noted that a place once seen only as a small stop is now recognized for its deep historical value.
He praised the efforts of Minister H. K. Patil, saying that Lakkundi’s history has now reached a wider audience. The town is known for its ancient temples, stepwells, lakes, and detailed stone carvings that reflect the skill of early craftsmen. He said such work would be difficult even with modern technology.
Horatti appealed for non political cooperation for the development of North Karnataka, saying heritage sites like Lakkundi can drive regional growth. He also appreciated villagers for handing over discovered artefacts to authorities, calling it a rare and honest practice.
Minister H. K. Patil said the government is preparing a major plan to develop Lakkundi into one of India’s top archaeological centres. He said the goal is to reveal over 100 temples and stepwells within a year and promote the site as a global attraction.
He said several restoration works are already underway, including temples and ancient wells. So far, more than 70 monuments have been identified and restored, with over 1200 artefacts numbered for study.
Patil added that about 10.16 crore rupees have been released for development works, including restoration of key temples and heritage structures. He said an open air museum is also planned to showcase the region’s history.
Experts estimate that recently discovered gold items alone are worth around eight crore rupees. Officials said more excavations may reveal even greater historical treasures in the coming years.
MLA C. C. Patil also praised villagers for their cooperation, saying their support has helped uncover Lakkundi’s ancient glory. He said ongoing work may reveal a new chapter of history for the region.
Officials present said coordinated efforts between government, archaeologists, and local residents will continue to promote Lakkundi as a major heritage tourism destination for the world.
