China-Pak submarines
Islamabad
The Pakistan Navy is set to strengthen its fleet with the addition of advanced submarines from China, according to reports. The move is part of an ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries aimed at modernising Pakistan’s maritime capabilities.
Officials in Islamabad said the new submarines are expected to significantly enhance underwater combat and surveillance capabilities in the Arabian Sea. The platforms are believed to feature improved stealth technology, extended operational range, and advanced weapons systems designed for both deterrence and tactical operations.
The acquisition reflects deepening strategic ties between Pakistan and China, particularly in the defence sector. Over the past decade, China has emerged as one of Pakistan’s key military suppliers, providing naval vessels, fighter aircraft, and air defence systems.
The development comes amid heightened regional security concerns and ongoing modernisation efforts within the Pakistan Armed Forces. Analysts note that expanding submarine capability is a priority for Pakistan as it seeks to maintain a balance of power in the Indian Ocean region.
The announcement also follows Islamabad’s broader efforts to diversify and upgrade its naval assets, including frigates and coastal defence systems. The new submarines are expected to complement existing platforms and improve Pakistan’s ability to conduct long-range patrols and intelligence gathering.
While details of the exact number and specifications remain limited, defence observers say the deal underscores China’s growing role as a major defence partner in South Asia and highlights shifting naval dynamics in the region.
