All India Radio’s direct phone-in programme “Searching for Light” received a good response from the public as District Magistrate S.J. Somashekhar listened to grievances raised by citizens from various parts of the district.

During the one-hour programme, more than 16 callers contacted the helpline and shared issues related to basic civic needs such as road repairs, drinking water supply, street lighting, land records, and other public concerns.

Ganesh Kumar from Kothur village in Virajpet taluk raised the issue of difficulty in purchasing fertilizer without an FID card. In response, the Deputy Commissioner clarified that there has been no change in the fertilizer supply system and assured there is no need for concern.

Harris from Seventh New Fort near Sutikoppa requested land correction work, to which the official said instructions would be issued to the concerned officer.

Vani from Kuradalu village in Madikeri taluk highlighted the difficulties faced by a disabled family member due to lack of proper road access. She requested an asphalt road, and the Deputy Commissioner assured priority action and coordination with local MLAs.

Several other callers raised issues including delayed land surveys, incomplete road works, drinking water shortages during summer, and pending housing applications. Officials responded to many of the complaints, promising follow-up action and departmental coordination.

The Deputy Commissioner also directed officials to speed up land measurement, improve water supply systems, and resolve civic issues in coordination with municipal authorities and panchayats.

Some callers suggested monthly public grievance meetings and surprise visits to government offices to improve accountability.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of programme manager M. Shakuntala. AIR Madikeri station officials and district department representatives were present during the interaction.

Officials said the initiative helped bridge communication between the administration and the public, allowing citizens to directly raise their issues and receive immediate responses.
