John Stones to leave Manchester City after decade-long Guardiola era at club

England defender ends trophy-filled spell defined by versatility, titles and tactical evolution

London

England defender John Stones will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing to a close a decade-long spell that spanned the entirety of Pep Guardiola’s transformative reign at the club.

Stones joined City in 2016 as one of the first major signings of the Guardiola era and went on to become a key figure in the team’s possession-based, tactically fluid system. Known for his composure on the ball and ability to step into midfield, he was often used in a hybrid defensive role that helped redefine modern centre-back play.

During his time at the club, Stones helped Manchester City win 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League crown, establishing himself as one of the most decorated defenders of his generation.

However, injuries in recent seasons and increased competition for places have seen the 31-year-old fall down the pecking order, with his contract set to expire and not being renewed.

Stones confirmed his departure on social media, reflecting emotionally on his time at the club. “They say all good things must come to an end, but this thing we have had has been the greatest and it will remain a part of me forever,” he wrote on Instagram.

In total, Stones made 293 appearances for City, scoring 19 goals and contributing significantly to the team’s tactical evolution under Guardiola. The club described him as “the very embodiment of Pep Guardiola’s City,” praising his technical ability, passing range, intelligence and work rate.

Stones remains part of the England national team setup and, fitness permitting, is expected to feature at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His departure follows another major exit from the club, with captain Bernardo Silva also set to leave after nine years at Manchester City, marking the end of an era for the Premier League champions.
