SRH assistant coach praises opener’s planning, awareness and fearless batting ahead of Mumbai clash

Abhishek Sharma’s fearless batting in IPL 2026 is backed by meticulous preparation and tactical awareness, according to James Franklin, assistant coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Franklin highlighted the opener’s detailed approach to studying opposition bowlers and planning his innings well in advance.
“As far as Abhishek is concerned, he is very detailed with how he plans and prepares for oppositions. He will know and understand what bowlers will try and present to him, particularly in the PowerPlay,” Franklin said.
Abhishek has emerged as one of the standout performers of the ongoing IPL season, leading the run charts with 380 runs from eight matches. His aggressive stroke-play at the top of the order has played a key role in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s strong campaign so far.
The left-handed batter has consistently dominated bowlers during the PowerPlay overs while also showing awareness of match situations, making him one of the most dangerous openers this season.
Franklin noted that Abhishek actively engages in discussions regarding opposition bowlers and possible strategies they may employ against him.
“He likes to have conversations around the different bowlers that he is going to be coming up against in the next game. So, he will be well aware of potentially how they might come at him,” Franklin explained.
Earlier in the tournament, Abhishek had fallen to a slower-ball variation from Mohammed Shami during a match against Lucknow Super Giants, raising speculation that Mumbai Indians might attempt a similar tactic.
However, Franklin believes the batter’s anticipation and preparation make him capable of adapting quickly to different challenges.
The upcoming contest could also see an exciting battle between Abhishek and premier Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah, whose ability to strike early remains vital for Mumbai’s chances.
With both teams eyeing important points in the league stage, Abhishek’s form at the top may once again prove decisive for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
