The remarks were made during his visit to Dharwad, where the rally has sparked political discussion. Speaking to reporters in Dharwad, Santosh Lad said that organising a silent procession to express solidarity with a leader is neither unlawful nor inappropriate. He emphasised that democracy thrives on the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and citizens must be allowed to voice their opinions without fear, provided they adhere to legal norms.
The rally in question was organised by supporters of Vinay Kulkarni and saw participation from party workers, local residents, and sympathisers. Unlike traditional protests, the procession was conducted silently, without slogans or loud demonstrations, reflecting a restrained and symbolic show of support. Participants reportedly walked through designated routes in the city while maintaining discipline and order.
Lad pointed out that such demonstrations do not disrupt public life when carried out responsibly. He added that authorities had monitored the situation closely to ensure that the rally remained peaceful and did not lead to any untoward incidents. According to officials, normal activities in Dharwad continued uninterrupted during the event.
The minister’s statement comes amid ongoing political debates surrounding Vinay Kulkarni. While some opposition leaders have questioned the need for such rallies, supporters argue that it is their democratic right to stand by their leader during challenging times. Lad reiterated that peaceful protests, including silent marches, are an essential feature of a vibrant democracy and should not be discouraged.
He further noted that public representatives often receive support from their constituencies in different forms, and such expressions should be respected as long as they remain within the framework of law. The Karnataka government, he said, is committed to upholding democratic values and ensuring that citizens’ rights are protected.
The issue has triggered wider discussions across political circles in the state, with differing viewpoints on the appropriateness and timing of the rally. However, Santosh Lad’s remarks underline a clear message that peaceful and non-disruptive demonstrations continue to be a valid means of public expression in a democratic society.
