Precautionary advisory issued to stay safe from lightning

Karwar

Authorities have issued a public precautionary advisory urging people to take safety measures during thunderstorms and lightning, which are commonly seen during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, especially in the afternoon and evening.

Officials said people should first check weather updates and follow alerts sent through the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) on mobile phones before stepping out. Outdoor activities such as farming, grazing cattle, fishing, boating, and unnecessary travel should be avoided during adverse weather.

People have been advised not to take shelter under trees, electric poles, or metal structures, as these attract lightning. Instead, safe buildings should be used for shelter. Staying away from water bodies like lakes and rivers is also strongly recommended.

In case of sudden lightning while outdoors, people should squat with feet together and cover their head and ears if no shelter is available. Those in vehicles should remain inside with windows closed.

Officials warned against using mobile phones, umbrellas with metal rods, and other metal objects during thunderstorms. Contact with electrical appliances, wires, and plumbing systems should also be avoided as lightning can travel through them.

People have been advised to move children, elderly persons, and livestock to safe locations. Travel should be postponed if thunderstorms are predicted.

Authorities stressed that following these simple precautions can help prevent loss of life and reduce lightning-related accidents during the rainy season.
