The famous Yana rock formations in Uttara Kannada district have received national recognition after the Geological Survey of India declared them a Geoheritage Site of National Importance. The announcement was made under the Ministry of Mines after a resolution passed during the 176th foundation year celebrations of the GSI.
According to reports, the Yana rocks are about 2,700 million years old and are made mainly of dolomitic limestone shaped by natural weathering over billions of years. Experts say the site contains 61 unique landforms within a small radius, including the tall Bhairaveshwar and Mohini rock peaks, making it important for geological study and tourism. The Geological Survey of India has also written to the Karnataka government urging protection of the site and promotion of eco friendly tourism.
Officials said such natural heritage sites cannot be recreated once damaged, so careful conservation is needed for future generations. The declaration is expected to boost research interest, attract more tourists, and support the local economy of Uttara Kannada district.
Local leaders and tourism officials welcomed the decision, saying Yana will now gain stronger visibility on the global tourism map and encourage sustainable development in the region. Authorities also stated that awareness programmes, guided tours, and scientific studies will be encouraged around Yana so that visitors can understand its geological importance while ensuring protection of the fragile rock formations for long term preservation and responsible eco tourism practices in the coming years.
