Despite Gujarat Titans being bundled out for 100 while chasing 200 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, skipper Shubman Gill chose to focus his post-match criticism on the bowling unit, highlighting what he believed were costly lapses in the middle overs that allowed MI to post a match-winning total of 199/5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Tilak Varma’s blistering unbeaten 101 off 45 balls proved decisive as Mumbai Indians recovered strongly after early setbacks, capitalising on Gujarat’s inability to maintain control in the latter stages of the innings.
Although Kagiso Rabada picked up three wickets in the powerplay, Gujarat failed to sustain pressure through the middle phase.
Gill admitted that on a slightly sluggish pitch, his side had targeted a par score of around 160–170 but fell short in execution.
He stressed that inconsistent lengths and missed plans in the middle overs allowed Mumbai to shift momentum decisively in their favour.
The GT captain said the defeat should be viewed as a learning opportunity, especially with the tournament entering a crucial phase.
He acknowledged that while conditions were challenging, the bowling group failed to adapt consistently to the surface.
Gujarat’s margin of defeat—99 runs—marked their heaviest loss in IPL history, underlining the scale of the collapse despite MI themselves putting up a recoverable start early in the innings.
Gill further pointed out that slight dew in the second innings may have marginally eased batting conditions, but insisted the pitch behaviour remained largely similar throughout the match.
In reply, Gujarat’s chase never gained momentum as they collapsed early, losing key wickets inside the powerplay and eventually folding for 100.
MI’s bowlers maintained discipline throughout, ensuring no resistance from the middle and lower order.
With this result, Gujarat Titans slipped to sixth place in the standings, while Mumbai Indians moved up with a much-needed win.
Gill concluded by stating that the team would regroup ahead of upcoming away fixtures, aiming to correct their inconsistencies and return to winning ways quickly.
He emphasised that execution in pressure moments will define Gujarat Titans’ progress in remaining IPL 2026 matches.
