Telangana BJP on Saturday alleged that its state president N Ramchander Rao was placed under house arrest ahead of a planned protest at Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s residence.
The party said the protest was called to oppose the Congress over the defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. According to BJP leaders, police action was taken to prevent the demonstration, and photographs of the situation were shared on social media.
Despite the restrictions, Rao said the party would continue its campaign against the Congress. He criticised the party for blocking the Constitution Amendment Bill that aimed to provide 33 per cent reservation for women and increase the number of Lok Sabha seats.
Calling the development a “black day,” Rao alleged that women were denied fair representation in legislatures. He also urged women in Telangana to protest against Congress leaders for the decision.
The Bill faced a major setback in Parliament on Friday after it failed to secure the required two-thirds majority. While 298 members supported the proposal, 230 voted against it. Out of 528 members present, at least 352 votes were needed for its passage.
The BJP has intensified its protests across states following the defeat of the Bill, accusing the Opposition of preventing women’s empowerment.
