Intro: Farmers in Vijayapura struggle due to lack of safe resting facilities at the busy APMC yard
Vijayapura
In Vijayapura district, where agriculture supports the economy, the poor condition of basic facilities for farmers has become a serious issue. Hundreds of farmers visit the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) yard daily to sell their produce, but they are left without a safe place to rest.
The Raitha Bhavan, built to provide shelter to farmers, is now in a dangerous condition. Constructed over 50 years ago, the building has severely deteriorated. The roof is collapsing, pillars are weak, walls are cracked, and the foundation is damaged. The structure is no longer safe for use and is on the verge of collapse.
The building has 24 rooms, all in poor condition. Farmers coming from far-off areas are forced to stay outside in the open, facing heat and unsafe surroundings. The premises have also become dirty and are now used by rodents instead of people.
Historically, the Raitha Bhavan was an important facility. Its foundation stone was laid in 1968, and it was inaugurated in 1974 at a cost of ₹3.5 lakh. It served farmers for many years but is now completely neglected, showing lack of attention from authorities.
Farmers are now demanding immediate action. They have urged the government to either repair the building or demolish it and construct a new, modern Raitha Bhavan with proper facilities. A new building should include a large hall for around 2,000 farmers and at least 50 rooms for stay.
With the budget approaching, this is a key opportunity for the government to act. Providing proper facilities will support farmers and reflect true commitment to their welfare.
