NEW DELHI

India’s leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, is celebrating a major milestone in its journey toward workplace equality.

The company announced that its female workforce has now surpassed 1,300 employees.

This growth is largely driven by a strategic move to hire more women for technical roles at its massive manufacturing plants located in Gurugram and Manesar.

Traditionally, automotive shopfloors were male-dominated environments, but Maruti Suzuki is changing that narrative. Over the last two years, the company has systematically recruited women for critical tasks, including engine assembly, transmission work, and quality control. These roles require extreme precision and consistency, and the company notes that its female technicians are excelling. To ensure a level playing field, all new hires undergo the same rigorous training as their male colleagues, opening doors for long-term career growth.

CEO Hisashi Takeuchi expressed that while women have always succeeded in the company’s offices, true integration happens on the factory floor. To support this vision, Maruti Suzuki has invested in significant infrastructure upgrades. The facilities now feature dedicated restrooms, changing rooms, and crèche services for working mothers. Safety has also been prioritized with extra security patrols and guards during evening shifts.

Beyond physical upgrades, the company is focused on culture. All employees must complete training on preventing sexual harassment, and sensitivity workshops are held to ensure an inclusive environment. By fostering this supportive ecosystem, Maruti Suzuki is proving that the future of Indian manufacturing is not just about machines, but about empowering a diverse and skilled workforce.
