Former India spinner suggests Ruturaj Gaikwad play straighter and build innings calmly
Chennai
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested a small but important technical adjustment for Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, urging him to focus on playing more “down the ground” as the batter continues to search for form in IPL 2026. The observation comes at a time when CSK are beginning to regain momentum after a shaky start to their campaign.
Chennai Super Kings had lost their first three matches but have since bounced back with consecutive wins, including a strong performance against Kolkata Knight Riders. The turnaround has eased pressure on Gaikwad’s leadership, though his individual batting form remains under scrutiny.
Ashwin said the wins would help the skipper settle into his role with greater clarity and freedom. He stressed that T20 cricket demands consistent intent but also smart decision-making early in the innings, especially for top-order batters.
Gaikwad has managed only 63 runs in five matches, with a highest score of 28, leading to discussions around potential changes in the batting order. One of the options being considered is promoting young batter Ayush Mhatre to open alongside Sanju Samson, allowing Gaikwad to shift to No. 3 and rebuild his innings with less immediate pressure.
Ashwin pointed out that Gaikwad has been falling into the trap of playing across the line too early, resulting in dismissals before he can settle. He contrasted this with more effective approaches taken by other batters in the squad, who have prioritized straight-bat shots and timing over risky horizontal strokes.
The spinner advised that Gaikwad should look to spend the initial phase of his innings playing straight and trusting timing rather than forcing scoring opportunities. According to him, such an adjustment would not only improve consistency but also reduce early dismissals that have hurt CSK’s top-order stability this season.
Meanwhile, former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn credited a century from Sanju Samson for triggering CSK’s revival. He noted that strong individual performances often lift the entire dressing room, creating momentum that can transform a campaign.
With confidence gradually returning to the squad, CSK will hope Gaikwad finds form soon as they continue their push in IPL 2026, balancing leadership responsibilities with the need to anchor the batting order more effectively in the matches ahead.
