Member of Parliament B. Y. Raghavendra has called the Women’s Reservation Act, which ensures 33 percent seats for women in Parliament and State Assemblies, a historic and long-awaited decision. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making it possible.
Speaking at a press meet, he said the bill, which had remained pending for years, will now be implemented after constituency redistribution based on the 2011 Census. A special three-day session of Parliament is set to begin soon to take this forward.
He described the move as a strong step toward respecting women’s power and ensuring equality. Referring to the teachings of Basavanna, he said the law reflects ideals of justice and equal rights for women. He added that this is not just a legal change but a proud moment for the country.
Raghavendra noted that women have struggled for decades for fair representation, and this decision marks a major victory. He said the new system could increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to around 850, with nearly 270 seats reserved for women.
He also dismissed claims that the move is politically motivated, calling it a constitutional and meaningful reform. The MP confirmed his participation in the upcoming Parliament session and thanked women voters of Shivamogga for their support.
He further spoke about local issues, including efforts to continue IndiGo flight services and ongoing railway terminal work, assuring completion soon.
