Petroleum Ministry corrects PNG gasification figures

New Delhi

The Petroleum Ministry clarified that a recent briefing incorrectly stated LPG connection growth, confirming that the reported figure actually refers to Piped Natural Gas connections, not LPG. The ministry said the error was inadvertent and regretted.

Officials stated that 4.05 lakh PNG connections have been gasified over the past five weeks, while an additional 4.41 lakh consumers have registered for new connections. The correction comes amid ongoing efforts to expand cleaner household energy access across urban areas.

The ministry also assured that domestic LPG supply remains stable, with no reports of shortages or disruptions at distributor levels despite geopolitical tensions affecting global energy markets. Authorities emphasised that supply chains are being closely monitored to ensure uninterrupted availability.

Consumers have been encouraged to consider alternative clean energy options such as PNG and electric cooktops as part of broader energy transition efforts. The government also urged citizens to avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG, stressing reliance on official updates only.

Digital adoption in fuel distribution has increased significantly, with nearly 98 per cent of LPG bookings now done online. Delivery Authentication Code-based deliveries have also risen to about 92 per cent, helping reduce diversion and improve transparency.

The government reiterated that priority is being given to essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions to ensure consistent fuel supply even under external pressures.
