Karate champion backs major shift for women

RAIPUR

International karate star Harsha Sahu has come forward to praise the Women’s Reservation Bill, describing it as a historic leap for female leadership in India. The athlete expressed her deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that the initiative will transform how women influence the nation’s highest levels of decision-making.

Sahu highlighted that while Indian women are already showing their strength in various fields, this bill provides the necessary platform for them to thrive in politics. “This move will help women establish a much stronger presence in Parliament and policymaking,” she stated. She believes the reservation will inspire a new generation of women to take an active role in shaping the country’s future laws.

The implementation of the bill is tied to a broader plan to expand the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816 seats. Under this new structure, approximately 273 seats—nearly one-third of the total—will be reserved specifically for women. Government officials indicated that the process would involve a new delimitation bill, likely using 2011 Census data to reorganize voting constituencies across the country.

Known officially as the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, the policy includes specific provisions to ensure representation for women in the SC and ST categories as well. Although the Union Cabinet has already approved the necessary amendments, the changes are expected to fully take effect starting with the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. For stars like Sahu, the act represents a permanent shift toward a more inclusive and balanced Indian democracy.
