China sees strong rebound in int travel

New Delhi

China has reported a strong rise in international travel in the first quarter of 2026, indicating continued recovery in global mobility and cross-border tourism activity, according to official updates highlighted by Ambassador Xu Feihong.

In a statement, Xu said both inbound and outbound travel recorded notable growth, reflecting improved global connectivity and easing of travel barriers. The increase has been supported by simplified visa procedures, stronger tourism demand, and the gradual normalisation of international movement.

Data for Q1 2026 shows that China recorded about 185 million inbound and outbound trips, marking a year-on-year increase of around 13.5 per cent. Foreign visitor arrivals also rose sharply, registering growth of over 20 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The rebound signals a broader recovery in global travel flows, with both tourism and business travel contributing to the uptick. Airlines and travel operators have also reported higher demand across major international routes, particularly in Asia and Europe.

Officials attributed the growth to policy measures aimed at facilitating cross-border travel, including streamlined visa rules and expanded travel agreements with partner countries. Improved flight connectivity and rising consumer confidence have further supported the trend.

The China is increasingly focusing on reviving its tourism and services sector, which was significantly impacted in previous years due to global disruptions. The current momentum is seen as a key indicator of economic normalisation.

Analysts say the recovery in international travel also reflects stronger global economic engagement, with mobility expected to continue rising through 2026 if current trends persist.
