BJP leader P C George on Friday criticised certain Catholic bishops and asserted that the proposed amendment to the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act (FCRA) will be passed in the Lok Sabha.
George alleged that a bishop from the Kanjirapally diocese had asked nuns to vote for the UDF, questioning the Church’s role in political matters. He said such actions were inappropriate and asked whether the Church was aligned with any political party.
George clarified that his remarks were aimed at only a section of bishops and not the Church as a whole. He claimed that he had worked for the welfare of the Church and criticised those opposing the FCRA amendment. According to him, the bill only seeks disclosure of foreign funding and will not create difficulties, as assured by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He questioned why some church leaders were objecting despite these assurances and alleged that their opposition was politically motivated. George also said that bishops who engage in politics should be treated as political figures.
Reiterating his stand, he claimed that religious institutions are not bound to follow every directive issued by bishops and said such instructions would not impact his electoral prospects. He expressed confidence of winning the Poonjar seat with a strong margin.
George further said the BJP respects all religions but would respond to criticism from certain sections. He also questioned why churches were hesitant to disclose foreign funding details if there was nothing to hide.
His son, Shone George, who contested from Pala, also criticised sections of the Church, alleging lack of support for the BJP despite its backing on various issues. The Catholic Church has not responded to the allegations so far.
