A total of 149 leopards died in Madhya Pradesh over 14 months starting January 2025, according to data obtained through an RTI query. Activist Ajay Dube, who filed the request, called the figures alarming and highlighted the serious risks faced by wildlife. The Forest Department said accidents caused the highest number of deaths, with 31 per cent linked to road mishaps, including 19 on highways. Officials stated that efforts are underway to reduce fatalities and added that a four per cent mortality rate is within acceptable limits.
