Brazilian midfielder calls time after health scare, leaves lasting global football legacy
London
Oscar, the former Chelsea and Brazil midfielder, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 following health complications related to a cardiac condition.
Oscar, who was playing for São Paulo FC, made the decision after being hospitalised for five days in November. Medical evaluations confirmed that he was suffering from vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to fainting episodes.
Despite being under contract with São Paulo until 2027, the midfielder opted to terminate his deal early in the interest of his long-term health. In an emotional message shared on the club’s social media, Oscar expressed regret at not being able to contribute more on the pitch.
“I wanted to do more for São Paulo and continue playing, as I still had the ability and age on my side. Unfortunately, this happened,” he said, adding that he would now continue supporting the club as a fan.
Oscar’s career spanned continents and brought him significant success at both club and international levels. During his time with Chelsea, he won two Premier League titles, playing a key role in the club’s midfield with his creativity and technical ability.
He later moved to China, where he enjoyed a successful stint with Shanghai Port FC, winning three Chinese Super League titles and becoming one of the most prominent foreign players in the league.
On the international stage, Oscar represented Brazil national football team with distinction, winning the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013. He also featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, scoring Brazil’s lone goal in the team’s historic semifinal defeat to Germany.
Returning to his boyhood club São Paulo in 2024 marked a full-circle moment in his career. Though his journey has ended earlier than expected, Oscar leaves behind a legacy of skill, professionalism, and achievements across global football.
