Augusta
Maria Jose Marin scripted history with a stunning victory at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, capitalising on a dramatic collapse by Asterisk Talley to secure a memorable four-shot win.
Marin, a junior at the University of Arkansas, delivered a composed final round of 4-under 68 to finish at a tournament-record 14-under 202, becoming the first Colombian to win the prestigious event held at Augusta National.
The turning point came at the iconic 12th hole, where Talley, a 17-year-old Californian who had been in control for much of the tournament, suffered a nightmare sequence. Twice finding the water from the bunker, she carded a quadruple-bogey 7, undoing her lead in a matter of minutes.
“I just reminded myself to stay patient because anything can happen here,” Marin said, reflecting on the pivotal moment that shifted momentum decisively in her favour.
Until then, the contest had been tightly poised. Talley, who had played near-flawless golf, began to falter with missed opportunities on the 10th and 11th holes, allowing Marin to draw level before the dramatic collapse unfolded.
Marin, in contrast, remained steady under pressure. A crucial birdie on the par-5 13th hole gave her a commanding advantage, while her ability to recover and maintain composure down the stretch ensured she stayed ahead of the chasing pack.
Spain’s Andrea Revuelta briefly threatened with a strong run through Amen Corner but ultimately settled for runner-up after closing with a 68. Talley, unable to recover from her costly errors, finished well off the pace after a disappointing back nine.
Marin’s triumph places her among elite company, becoming only the third NCAA champion to win the event, following past winners who have gone on to achieve global success.
As she walked up the 18th green, Marin’s smile reflected the magnitude of her achievement. Holding the trophy aloft, she described the victory as “magical,” calling Augusta National “the temple of golf.”
Her breakthrough win not only marks a personal milestone but also signals the rise of a new star in women’s golf on one of the sport’s grandest stages.
