A Nepal court extended former PM KP Sharma Oli’s custody by two days to finish questioning him regarding his role in the 2025 Gen-Z protest violence.
KATHMANDU
A court in Nepal has decided to keep former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in custody for two more days. This extension allows investigators more time to look into his alleged role regarding the Gen-Z protests that shook the nation in 2025.
The order came from Judge Purushottam Khatiwada Kshetri at the Kathmandu District Court. Authorities are specifically questioning Oli about the violence that occurred during major demonstrations last September. Because Oli was arrested last Saturday and is currently dealing with several health issues, the legal process looks a bit different than usual. Instead of a police station, investigators are recording his statements at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care.
The core of the case focuses on the events of September 8 and 9, 2025. Those days saw heavy unrest and tragic casualties, leading to a deep investigation into who was responsible for the crackdowns. Police noted that Oli’s testimony is not yet finished, which is why they asked for the extra time. Doctors have advised that he is not healthy enough to be moved, so police and lawyers are working around his medical schedule.
This move follows a report from a special panel led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki, which looked into the protest violence. While other officials, like former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, are also being held, the focus remains on Oli. Officials say the next legal steps depend entirely on what these final statements reveal.
