State shifts focus to renewable energy innovation through global partnerships and incubation
Bengaluru
After nurturing thousands of start-ups across sectors, Karnataka is now pivoting towards renewable energy technologies with a global collaboration aimed at boosting innovation and entrepreneurship.
The State Energy Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of New South Wales (UNSW), NSRCEL, and Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FSID) to promote clean energy start-ups. The initiative, facilitated by the Australian India Business Council, aims to nurture around 20 start-ups annually across solar, wind, energy storage, and green fuels.
The MoU was signed by K.P. Rudrappaiah of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (KREDL) and Prof. Lisa Zamberlan of UNSW. As part of the three-year partnership, an incubation and technology innovation centre will be established in Bengaluru.
Officials said KREDL will provide infrastructure and funding support, while UNSW will offer technical mentorship, global research access, and international exposure through its Founders Programme. High-potential start-ups will also gain access to global markets and advanced incubation.
Energy Minister K. J. George said the initiative will strengthen Karnataka’s clean energy ecosystem and attract investments. Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta noted that the partnership aims to create a global innovation ecosystem benefiting businesses, government, and citizens.
Prof. Zamberlan said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing clean energy innovation and sustainable development.
The move is expected to position Karnataka as a leading hub for renewable energy start-ups, aligning with global climate goals and India’s energy transition roadmap.
