Jailer held for taking bribe from inmate

A jailer of Haliya Sub Jail was caught by the Lokayukta for demanding a bribe from an inmate to release government funds meant for him.

The accused, Kallappa Gasti, allegedly demanded Rs 60,000 from an inmate named Raj Kumar, who had worked in the jail and was eligible to receive government money. Reports say the inmate was sanctioned Rs 1.34 lakh and had already received Rs 45,000 in two installments. The jailer demanded money to release the remaining amount.

According to the complaint, an advance of Rs 10,000 was paid through PhonePe to a third party, and the jailer instructed the complainant to meet at different locations for further payments.

Acting on the complaint, a Lokayukta team led by DSP Dhanya Naik and Inspector Vinayak Billava conducted a raid and took the accused into custody.

Following the incident, the jailer was immediately transferred to Belagavi Jail. Police have begun further investigation into the case.
