An 80-year-old woman was duped by a conman posing as an acquaintance, who drove away with her gold bangles after gaining her trust through a fabricated story.
According to a complaint filed by Kanaka Sampath, a resident of Basavanagudi, the incident occurred around 11.45 am on March 28 when she was alone at home. The accused arrived in a white Toyota Fortuner and struck up a friendly conversation, pretending to be a known person or distant relative.
To win her confidence, he claimed his wedding was scheduled next month and invited her, even promising to gift her a sari. During the conversation, he noticed her gold bangles, praised their design and said he wanted similar ones made for his fiancée.
He convinced her to accompany him to a jewellery shop, offering to drive her as she had difficulty walking due to leg pain. Trusting him, she got into the vehicle. After driving around the Mani Sports area and claiming no shops were nearby, he brought her back home.
The accused then told her he would call a jeweller to her residence and requested the bangles to show the design. While distracting her with images of gold bars on his phone, he took the bangles weighing about 50 grams.
Within moments, he asked her to step out of the vehicle and sped away. The woman later realised the bangles were missing and approached the police.
A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 303 (theft) and 318 (cheating). Police said CCTV footage has captured the vehicle’s registration number, and efforts are on to trace the accused.
