Farmers and spectators gathered in large numbers for a state-level pair bullock-cart competition held for the first time at Kuri Chikkanahalli near the Chikkamagaluru-Kadur highway. The event brought together participants from across Karnataka, turning the rural landscape into a vibrant arena of tradition and sport.
With agricultural work completed for the season, farmers used the opportunity to celebrate alongside their bullocks, which play a vital role in farming. The competition featured energetic races where pairs of bullocks pulled carts at high speed, responding to their owners’ commands. The thrilling scenes kept the audience engaged from start to finish.
A total of 52 pairs competed on the first day, with all participants showcasing the Hallikar breed, known for its strength and agility. Farmers from districts including Hassan, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Davangere, and Shivamogga took part in the event. Spectators cheered as bullocks raced across the track, raising dust and excitement.
Organizer Pawan said the two-day event aims to celebrate rural traditions and provide entertainment for farmers. On the first day, prizes included ₹80,000 for first place, ₹60,000 for second, ₹40,000 for third, and ₹20,000 for fourth, along with trophies.
The second day will feature around 50 to 60 more pairs, focusing on farm bullocks. Organizers expect over 110 pairs to participate, making it a grand celebration of culture and agriculture.
