Surge in Wild Elephant Sightings Alarms Residents in Kanakapura Taluk

Ramanagara

Residents of Kanakapura taluk in Bengaluru South district were left startled after a herd of wild elephants was spotted moving through villages, raising fresh concerns over increasing human-wildlife encounters in the region.

In a recent development, a group of wild elephants was seen near Koggedoddi village in Kanakapura taluk, creating panic among local residents. The sighting has added to growing reports of increased elephant movement in parts of Bengaluru South district, indicating a possible rise in wildlife activity near human settlements.

Eyewitnesses reported that the herd was later seen advancing towards Eka Eki village, catching villagers off guard. The sudden appearance of the elephants caused widespread alarm, with people rushing out of their homes to alert others. Both members of the public and forest department staff reacted swiftly, raising loud cries and shouting in an attempt to drive the animals away from the residential areas.

Startled by the noise and human presence, the herd reportedly retreated from the spot and moved back towards forested areas. While no injuries or damage to property have been reported so far, the incident has heightened anxiety among villagers who fear further encounters in the coming days.

Forest officials believe that the elephants may have strayed from the nearby Sangama Wildlife Sanctuary in search of food and water. Such movements are not uncommon, especially during certain seasons when natural resources within forest areas become scarce, forcing wildlife to venture closer to human habitation.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid approaching or provoking the animals. The forest department is said to be monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary measures to ensure both public safety and the protection of wildlife.

The increasing sightings have once again highlighted the need for effective strategies to manage human-wildlife conflict in rapidly expanding rural and semi-urban areas around Bengaluru.
