Rajnath attacks Cong ahead of Assam polls

Tezpur

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday launched a strong attack on the Congress, alleging that the party neglected Assam and treated the state unfairly during its years in power.

Speaking at an election rally in Tezpur in support of NDA candidate Prithviraj Rabha, Singh expressed confidence that the BJP-led alliance would secure victory in the upcoming Assembly elections. He praised Assam’s rich cultural heritage, globally known tea industry, and the legacy of bravery associated with Lachit Borphukan.

Highlighting the work of the current government, Singh said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state has seen progress in development while preserving its cultural identity. He claimed that during Congress rule, Assam faced major challenges such as insurgency, poverty, and unrest, but these issues have reduced significantly in recent years.

He further stated that the narrative in Assam has shifted from conflict and backwardness to growth and opportunity. According to him, villages located along the borders, which were once described as the “last villages,” are now being recognised as the “first villages” of the country.

Singh also pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid frequent visits to the Northeast, unlike previous governments, showing greater attention to the region’s development.

Meanwhile, the BJP has announced its election manifesto, promising the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code and an increase in financial assistance for women under the Orunodoi scheme. Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies is scheduled for April 9, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4.
