Mariamma alleges conspiracy over Medical Board decision

Kottayam

Mariamma Oommen on Tuesday alleged that there was a conspiracy behind the Kerala government’s 2023 decision to form a medical board to examine former chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Speaking to a TV channel, she said her husband was only suffering from a throat problem at the time, but a medical board was set up without consulting the family or Chandy himself. She claimed the move was based on complaints and was aimed at targeting her son, Chandy Oommen.

Mariamma said the decision deeply hurt her and described it as a serious attack on her son. She questioned why the government did not seek the family’s opinion before taking such a step. She also stated that her husband was mentally sharp and capable of making his own decisions regarding treatment.

In February 2023, a six-member medical board of specialists was formed to review Chandy’s health and treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. The panel was constituted after some relatives raised concerns about his care.

Later, Chandy had shared a video message stating that he was receiving proper care from his family and party. At the same time, 42 relatives, including his younger brother, had written to the Chief Minister seeking intervention for improved treatment.

Oommen Chandy was a senior Congress leader who represented the Puthuppally constituency since 1970 and served as Kerala Chief Minister twice.
