India mourns death of Surinamese leader

PARAMARIBO

Suriname is in mourning following the sudden passing of its former President, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, at the age of 67. The news of his death has triggered a wave of tributes from world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described Santokhi as a dear friend and a champion of the global Indian diaspora.

Santokhi, affectionately known as “Chan,” led Suriname from 2020 to 2025. Before his presidency, he served as a police commissioner and justice minister, earning the nickname “The Sheriff” for his tough stance on crime. He famously investigated the 1982 political killings that had long haunted the nation, showing a deep commitment to justice and the rule of law.

For India, Santokhi was more than just a foreign leader; he was a symbol of shared heritage. Born into an Indo-Surinamese family with roots in Bihar, he never forgot his origins. He made history in 2020 by taking his presidential oath in Sanskrit, a gesture that won hearts across India. Prime Minister Modi recalled this moment fondly, noting Santokhi’s tireless work to strengthen ties between the two nations through trade and culture.

Under his leadership, India and Suriname grew closer in areas like energy and technology. Santokhi was even honored with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman for his contributions to the Indian community abroad. As Suriname says goodbye to its “Sheriff,” the world remembers a statesman who led with humility and stayed true to his roots until the very end.
