Bill to declare Amaravati AP’s sole capital to be tabled in LS today

New Delhi

The Centre is set to introduce the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on April 1 to declare Amaravati as the sole capital of the state.

The proposal aims to amend the 2014 Act by clearly stating that Amaravati will be the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.

According to the state government, the Bill will provide legal clarity on the capital issue and support the vision of the TDP-led NDA administration. The move follows the recent resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Assembly backing Amaravati as the single capital.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had introduced the resolution, which was unanimously approved by the Assembly. The resolution was later sent to key authorities, including Parliament leaders and the Union Home Minister, seeking statutory recognition for Amaravati.

The original Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, had allowed Hyderabad to serve as a common capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for up to ten years. After that period, Andhra Pradesh was required to establish its own capital.

Speaking on the development, Naidu reiterated that Amaravati will remain the permanent capital and said no changes will be made to this decision. He also outlined plans to develop Amaravati as a modern Blue-Green city with a focus on sustainability and advanced infrastructure.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the city will become one of the most livable in the country and a major driver of economic growth. He added that Amaravati is expected to take full shape as a developed capital by 2028, calling it a key foundation for the future progress of Andhra Pradesh.
