Sikkim sets up 24×7 LPG control rooms

Slug: Monitoring Setup

Gangtok

The Sikkim government has set up a central control room in Gangtok and district-level centres across all six districts to monitor LPG supply. The step comes amid concerns over possible disruptions due to the ongoing West Asia conflict.

According to the Food and Civil Supplies Department, these control rooms will function 24×7 to ensure smooth distribution, prevent black marketing, and address public complaints. A regulated refill system has also been introduced, allowing domestic LPG refills every 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural regions.

Priority supply of commercial LPG will be given to essential services like hospitals and educational institutions. Authorities have ordered strict enforcement of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and daily reporting from district units.

Oil companies such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited are working closely with the Sikkim government to maintain a steady and uninterrupted LPG supply across the state.

At the national level, the Centre is actively monitoring the situation and has taken several steps to ensure adequate fuel availability. These include increasing refinery production and maintaining sufficient stocks of petroleum products to meet demand.

Despite global uncertainties, especially concerns related to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, officials have assured that India is well prepared. Two LPG carriers carrying around 94,000 metric tonnes are also heading towards Indian shores to support supply stability.
